April 22, 2016: Salute!

April 22, 2016

Today is a day of salutes for me. First, I salute the elected L.A. officials, including Mayor Eric Garcetti, who signed a pledge to protect transgender rights in Los Angeles. Here are the details in an L.A. Times article. The pledge is in response to Transform California, a statewide initiative by Equality California and the Transgender Law Center to end discrimination in the state.

I also salute the L.A. City Council, which voted unanimously last week to stop doing business with North Carolina and Mississippi, which recently passed anti-LGBT laws — including a bathroom bill in N.C. that requires people to use public restrooms that match the gender on their birth certificates.

And finally, I salute the L.A. Unified School District and the Santee Education Complex and its students and faculty members in South L.A. for installing what is believed to be the country’s first gender-neutral bathroom in a school. And, as importantly, for standing up to a group of haters who staged a loud, angry demonstration to protest the new restroom. While I don’t condone the violence that broke out between the teenage students and the adult protesters (per this Raw Story article), I love that they followed up with a rally (per this L.A. Times article) supporting their LGBTQ fellow students the next day.
