Feb. 26, 2016: Conversion vs. Transition

February 27, 2016

Mara and her siblings flew to Florida yesterday because their dad is very ill. She was the first one to arrive, and she went straight to the hospital to see him. Despite being loopy and not being able to focus on anything for more than a few seconds at a time, he perked up a bit when he saw her and said, “Hi Mara.” So what, right? So he usually starts to address her by her former name and has to correct himself. So this was a bit of a breakthrough.

On another note, Mara had a conversation with her brother, whom she doesn’t see that often, because he and his wife live in another state. He converted to Catholicism right around the time that Mara transitioned, and he’s very devout. While they were talking, he said he’d like to have another conversation with her and discuss both of their conversions. (Huh?) She set the record straight, saying that hers was not a conversion; that she has always been female and just transitioned to align her body and her public identity with her true gender. I don’t know if he got that.
