Dec. 6, 2015: Trans Advances

December 6, 2015

This Washington Post article pretty much sums up the advances that have been made in transgender rights during President Obama’s administration. The U.S. has made big strides. Yet it’s still taking a while for some people, like the Social Security Administration employees described in this story who were reluctant about changing the gender of a young transman in their records. (Mara was lucky. When she had her name and gender legally changed, there was no hesitation from the SSA employees who handled her case, and no one snickered or made any snide comments.) Transpeople also are still at the receiving end of discrimination and violence. But the tide is slowly turning.

It really helps when transpeople have the support of their families. We went to the 25th birthday party of a transman we are friends with. It was at his mom and dad’s house. They put on a really great party for him. And the people who came to celebrate were straight, trans, gay, lesbian, black, white, Latino, and on and on. This is where it really starts to make a difference.
