Nov. 30, 2015: Giving Back

December 1, 2015

Mara and I ran a 5k on Thanksgiving morning to benefit Hope of the Valley rescue mission. (This is us just before the race.) What a great way to give back during the holidays! And we still had time to cook dinner for a few people. Of course, we did some of the cooking and food prep the day before. Mara’s sister and brother-in-law, her mentee (a young transwoman), and a longtime friend joined us. To me, family goes beyond blood relatives; it includes close friends who care about us, no matter what our circumstances.

Mara and I also sing in a holiday choir, with gigs every weekend, starting next Saturday. We go to places like Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, the L.A. Mission, and the Veteran’s Administration. Some of the people we sing to don’t have family, at least not nearby. It’s really an honor and a privilege to sing to them.
