Sept. 3, 2015: Transgender Rights Pioneers

September 3, 2015

This New York Times article about Phyllis Frye, a pioneering transgender activist, is really eye-opening. Frye transitioned decades ago, when it was almost unheard of. She went through so much rejection and discrimination, and yet she kept on fighting. She was even instrumental in transgender inclusion in the fight for gay rights — really making the T in LGBT stand out. The story also mentions, and quotes, Mara Keisling, head of the National Center for Transgender Rights, another trans pioneer.

I salute all of the trans celebrities — like Caitlyn Jenner, Laverne Cox and Chaz Bono — for using their spotlights to shed light on the trans community as a segment of the population that deserves every right that non-trans-straight-cisgender people have. I just want to put it out there that those celebs — and all other trans people — stand on the shoulders of people like Frye and Keisling. It’s about time these women were recognized for their efforts.
