July 7, 2015: Turning the Tide

July 8, 2015

In my last post, I talked about far the transgender community has come. I know there is still a long road ahead; and this article in the Colorado Independent is just one example of how ultra-conservative organizations like the Family Resource Council keep coming up with unfounded reasons why trans people should be discriminated against. The backlash will continue, even as a more and more people in the U.S. accept the LGBT community.

But, as the media sheds a light on the trans community in thoughtful and sensitive ways, with TV shows like “Transparent” and “Becoming Us”, and as more films are being made about the transgender experience — an L.A. Times article about the annual Outfest LGBT film festival this week states that about 15% of the films in this year’s event focus on the trans experience — the tide is turning.

This well-written New York Times opinion piece about transgender equality sums up the road the trans community has traveled, the progress that has been made, and what the future may hold.
