June 29, 2015: We’ve Come a Long Way

June 30, 2015

First, I’m so happy that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality last week. Mara and I were already protected for two reasons: 1) We live in California, where marriage equality already exists; and 2) we were married as husband and wife, and under California law, the marriage stays intact post-transition, regardless of whether the state allowed same-sex marriage. And now, everyone in the U.S. is protected.

Yes, I knew (as just about everyone did) that there would be defiance against the decision in some states. We’ve come a long way, but the fight isn’t quite over yet. However, no one can dispute that marriage equality is now the law of the land.

Second, thank you John Oliver for going beyond the marriage equality issue and furthering the discussion on the “T” in “LGBT” on a recent “Last Week Tonight” show. Oliver is spot on, taking on all of the major issues associated with the transgender community, from asking trans people about their genitalia to bathroom bills.

While sexual orientation and gender identity are two different things, trans people face the same prejudices that gays, lesbians and bisexuals face. And, as Mara says, the trans community stands on their shoulders in terms of being treated equally and fairly under the law. Now, that fight definitely is far from over. But, as Harvey Milk once said, “Hope will never be silent.”
