Feb. 10, 2015: Women and Art

February 11, 2015

Mara and I participated in a group photo shoot on Sunday, just women. The photographer was Johanna Siegmann, a friend of ours who did our “Dames in the Dungeon” portrait. I can’t wait to see the finished photos. This series of photos is called “The Condition,” and it’s about how we, as woman, are expected to (and often do) go with the herd and do what’s expected of us. All of us wore long, black skirts and long-sleeved, dark tops. Very artsy. But what Mara and I loved was the camaraderie.

Mara loved being included in a group of ciswomen. Of course, she loves getting together with our trans friends, and so do I. But being accepted in a group of ciswomen is a big breakthrough for her. To her, this is part of what it means to be successful as a transwoman. This isn’t the first time we’ve hung with a group of ciswomen. And each time we do, Mara is stoked. I realize how much I take “going out with the girls” for granted. For Mara, it’s a huge affirmation.
