Feb. 2, 2015: 18 Years and Counting

February 3, 2015

Mara and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary yesterday. This photo was taken at the restaurant where we had dinner. When I made the reservation, I told them this was an anniversary dinner; and while we were there, no one batted an eye. (By the way, the restaurant, Girasol in Studio City, Calif., is excellent. The L.A. Times ranked it No. 35 among its top 101 L.A. restaurants of 2014.)

I posted the photo on my Facebook page and received three dozen “likes” so far, plus some really nice comments, including this one from someone I went to high school with: “18 years! Wow! Your marriage is now no longer a minor! Congratulations! And thank you for being a shining beacon of what the institution of marriage means! Happy Anniversary!”

That made my day, especially at a time when so many people still feel that a marriage like ours shouldn’t be legal, because it they think it threatens the institution of marriage. In California (even before marriage equality became legal), we were considered to still be married after Mara transitioned, because she was presenting as a he when we signed the marriage certificate. I wonder what would have happened to our marriage if we lived in a more conservative state.
