Dec. 30, 2014: Holidays 2014 — Part One

December 31, 2014

Mara and I were home in L.A. for the holidays this year — the first time since 2011. We considered having a quiet Christmas, just the two of us. But we decided to have a small dinner party (if you call 15 people a small group). It turned out to be one of the best Christmases ever for us. It was also the most diverse in terms of dinner guests, with people of different races, ethnicities, sexual orientations and gender identities.

This was also the first time we sent holiday cards from Mara and Mimi to everyone on our list. (Last year, we sent a few from Gary and Mimi, because some people still didn’t know about Mara’s transition.) And everyone who sent us cards, including a couple of my relatives who are pretty religious, addressed them to Mara and Mimi. That was unexpected. (Actually, I did get cards addressed only to me from two people in my immediate family, and that was expected. So it didn’t faze me or Mara.)

Happy New Year, and here’s to a prosperous, diverse, accepting, self-expressed 2015!
