Dec. 2, 2014: Another Domino Effect?

December 3, 2014

Awhile ago, I blogged about a trans teen girl in Maine who, with her family, sued her school district because she was not allowed to use the girls’ bathroom at school. She won. Here’s the story from MSN.com: http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/district-ordered-to-pay-transgender-student-dollar75k/ar-BBgfn09.

I love stories like this. Not only did the court ruling result in a nice settlement for her family (even though lawyers and others involved in the case get their piece of it), but — more importantly — it sets a precedent for all school districts in the state.

I’m hoping that, as with marriage equality, the passage of state laws and court victories in favor of transgender rights will have a domino effect across the country. It’s actually kind of absurd that issues such as “gay rights” and “trans rights” even exist, when “human rights,” by definition, includes everyone. It’s not “human-but-only-if-you’re-straight-white-and-Christian rights.”
