Nov. 17, 2014: Bible Lesson

November 18, 2014

An excellent article in the Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/brynn-tannehill/a-come-to-jesus-talk-with_b_6100028.html?fb_action_ids=10205159967349495&fb_action_types=og.comments&fb_source=other_multiline&action_object_map=%5B733439656730543%5D&action_type_map=%5B%22og.comments%22%5D&action_ref_map=%5B%5D.

I’m glad someone clarified what the Bible says about gender, including some contradictions. This is why I left the Catholic church and why I don’t belong to any organized religion. I have nothing against faith and spirituality. In fact, as a member of a 12-Step program, spirituality is at the core of my own healing. But when people use it to justify hatred and even violence toward other human beings for no other reason than the fact that they don’t conform to an organized religion’s interpretation — and it is an interpretation — of the Bible in terms of gender identity, that’s a contradiction of the very faith those people profess to espouse.

Even in Catholic school, where I was taught that if I’m “good” (read: if I obey Catholic dogma), I’ll go to heaven, and if I’m “bad,” I’ll go to hell (or purgatory), I was also taught that God is pure love. (How anyone can reconcile those two views is beyond me.) Pure: free from anything of a different, inferior, or contaminating kind. Love: a feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection, as for a parent, child, or friend. The dictionary — another book worth using as a reference — doesn’t say anything about hate in its definitions of those two words.
