August 7, 2014: Serving Their Country

August 8, 2014

This editorial in the Los Angeles Times (reprinted in the Arizona Daily Star) is right on: http://m.tucson.com/news/opinion/editorial/military-s-stance-on-transgenderism-a-baseless-policy/article_a922ef3a-61c6-508a-aabe-a06e17d2da28.html?mobile_touch=true

It’s ludicrous to lump transgender people with drug addicts and schizophrenics, especially in light of the mental health profession’s recent reclassification of “transgender” in the DSM-5. This Huffington Post article from last year explains it: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/04/gender-dysphoria-dsm-5_n_3385287.html

As Kristin Beck demonstrated, a transperson can serve in the military just as well as cispeople in uniform. It doesn’t matter whether a transperson is “out” or not. It doesn’t affect her (or his) ability to perform whatever duties are required to serve their country.

I had an argument with my dad years ago regarding whether gay people should have the same chance at jobs for which they are qualified as “straight” people do. He said they shouldn’t, because they are “abnormal.” I said they did, because a person’s sexual orientation has nothing to do with whether he or she is qualified for a job. Same for transpeople; their gender identity has nothing to do with their ability to do a job.
