April 22, 2014: Easter Sunday

April 23, 2014

I was invited to spend Easter Sunday with my immediate family. Actually, my mom knew how I felt about going to family gatherings without Mara, so she asked me if I wanted to come over for just a little while. I declined. It sounded like a compromise, but it really wasn’t. At least not for me. I knew that I would be regarded as someone who isn’t married, as if Mara doesn’t exist. I did call them to wish them a happy Easter. That was my compromise.

Instead, we had Mara’s sister and brother-in-law over for dinner. We broke out the fine china. We grilled a boneless leg of lamb. We had sparkling wine and some red wine. There was no pretending, no judgment, no trying to have a conversation over the sound of a blaring TV, no drama.
