April 1, 2014: Maryland

April 2, 2014

Another state, Maryland, has passed a law protecting the rights of transgenders. Here’s the story in the Baltimore Sun: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/blog/bal-assembly-passes-transgender-rights-bill-20140327,0,2027482.story. Maryland is the 17th state (plus D.C.) to pass this type of legislation.

I love that others in the LGBT community are sticking up for trans people, like the lesbian legislator who said that transgenders are “an important group of people who, frankly, we left out” of a similar state law protecting gays and lesbians that was passed in 2001.

It’s a pity that we have to pass laws to protect the rights of certain groups of people, when, constitutionally, they should already have the same rights as white, straight people. Otherwise, we end up with what I call legal discrimination (which is an oxymoron if I ever heard one).
