March 5, 2014: Alaska

March 6, 2014

I’m in Alaska. During winter. And it’s incredible. I’m on a media trip (flew here on Feb. 27), and they’ve been keeping us busy; that’s my excuse for not blogging over this past week. Anyway, I’ve told nearly everyone on this trip about Mara and me. I don’t look for opportunities to just blurt something out, but whenever anyone asks me about my “husband,” I feel I need to let them know. And the response has been positive. It’s a small group, just four journalists, all women.

I’ve told one of the P.R. reps who are escorting us, but I haven’t told the other. She asked whether I had any kids while we were having lunch one day with one other journalist and the P.R. rep’s boyfriend. I just said that, for various reasons, we weren’t able to have kids. (The main reason is because Mara has been on hormones for 20+ years, but I left out that detail.) I just didn’t want to say anything while her boyfriend was there. They are both from Idaho, a pretty conservative state. Also, he was what I call a “guy guy,” and I didn’t want to freak him out.

I guess I shouldn’t worry about how other people take it. First, I could be wrong about how I think they might take it. And second, why should I care? They are responsible for their own feelings and opinions.
