Feb. 25, 2014: Petition Schmetition

February 26, 2014

The petition to bring the new law allowing trans kids in California to use public school facilities that align with their gender identity to a vote failed to get enough valid signatures. Here’s the story, which was posted on NPR.org: http://www.npr.org/2014/02/25/282327776/repeal-of-calif-transgender-student-rights-law-fails.

The foes of the law aren’t giving up, but I believe the law will be upheld in the end. There’s just too much momentum for acceptance of the trans community. Foes have been saying that the law will allow kids to decide on a day-to-day basis how they want to identify in terms of gender. That’s so absurd. It’s a scare tactic. They’re trivializing a serious condition of a sub-population that has a suicide attempt rate of about 40 percent.
