Feb. 17, 2014: Still My Valentine

Happy belated Valentine’s Day! We had a superb dinner at home. We decided years ago that it wasn’t worth going out to a restaurant, fighting the crowds and traffic, and paying inflated prices, when we can make a multi-course dinner at home with wine pairings for half the price or even less. It takes all day to prepare for the evening, so we do it on a Saturday close to Feb. 14.

Being in a profession where she creates environments, Mara is in charge of the ambience. I’m the executive chef. But since Mara transitioned, she has been getting more into the cooking with me. We have another couple over, and they’re always impressed. I mean we “plate” the food with garnishes, set a table with white linens and our fine china in front of the fireplace, and light candles all around. And, other than the fact that Mara is now my sous chef, nothing has really changed about this event since her transition. She’s still my Valentine.
