Jan. 30, 2014: Validation Nation

January 31, 2014

There’s still a long way to go before trans people win the basic human and civil rights that we “normal” (whatever that means) people have. And, although it’s not probable that everyone in this country will eventually accept trans people for who they are, I believe it’s possible. Little by little, I’m seeing evidence that we’re becoming a validation nation.

Here’s one case in point: A major, upscale retailer is launching its spring campaign with 17 transgender models. Here’s the story, which was posted on Time.com today: http://business.time.com/2014/01/30/barneys-is-counting-on-17-transgender-models-for-its-spring-campaign/. This is a major coup for the trans community. Even though other retailers, reality shows, etc., have featured trans models for years, it was pretty sparse until now.

Another story, actually a blog at NPR.org, says that a trans student in Maine has won the right to use the girls’ bathroom at her school. Here’s that blog: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/01/30/268954731/maines-high-court-rules-in-favor-of-transgendered-student.
