Jan. 23, 2014: Their Choice: “Out” or “Stealth”

January 24, 2014

I read this article in the L.A. Times yesterday: http://www.latimes.com/local/la-me-c1-trans-video-diaries-20140122-dto,0,7488366.htmlstory#axzz2rH2krjtC. I’ve seen many videos of teens — and adults — in transition on YouTube, and I’m glad that they have a vehicle for being out and proud.

But I also respect those who want to “go stealth” — leave their former identity behind as they transition and be known only by the gender with which they identify, not as a transwoman or transman. It may be for career reasons. (Unfortunately, even though there are laws protecting transpeople, some companies continue to discriminate.) It may be to protect the person’s family. It may be that the person just wants to cut all ties with his or her former identity. The reasons are endless, and it doesn’t matter why someone wants to go stealth. Whether or not to be “out” is his or her choice.
