Jan. 20, 2014: Well Said

January 20, 2014

I saw this quote from Martin Luther King Jr., whom we commemorate today with a national holiday:

“Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

Well said.

Although this quote speaks about a different target of hate in the middle of the Civil Rights movement, to me it includes all hate targets — anyone who is “different” from what is perceived as “the norm,” in terms of race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, gender, gender-identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status and other factors.
