Jan. 7, 2014: Raw

January 7, 2014

Mara and I are writing a “two-woman show” (although I think we’ll use a few more actors) to tell our story. I’ve written my part and I need to do a revision based on comments from a friend who is in the entertainment industry.

Mara is having trouble writing hers. She has been saying what she has to say about her experience as a transwoman in a “nice” way. Doesn’t want to step on any toes, for example. But she confessed to me last night that what she really wants is to start out by saying “fuck you” to the audience. She doesn’t really want to offend anyone; but her deepest feelings are that she was born into an unfair world, and the audience represents that world.

I told her to go ahead and write her part of the script like she was writing a journal; like no one is ever going to read it. Just let it all out. Make it raw, edgy. Then, let our friend (and another close friend who has written for TV) read it and make comments on how to revise it to make it work for a live show. Maybe they’ll tell her to put it up as is.

The point is that this show is supposed to be raw. It’s supposed to reveal our experiences and our feelings about those experiences, whether they are positive, negative, funny or tragic — or all of the above, which is what my part ended up being.
