Nov. 17, 2013: What’s a Photo Worth?

November 18, 2013

What’s a photo worth? Apparently a lot, according to this story in The Daily Kos: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/11/14/1255571/-Texas-high-school-refuses-to-put-transgender-senior-s-photo-in-yearbook?detail=email.

One the one hand, I feel bad for this trans kid, because the school district does not want to include his photo in his high school yearbook due to the fact that he’s wearing a tux in his photo. He’s right: The yearbook is for the students to remember one another, and this is how he wants his classmates to remember him, because this is how he presents at school. Beside, so what if he wants to wear a tux? It’s classy and conservative by today’s measure of how a lot of kids are dressing.

On the other hand, whatever the outcome of this dispute, he is very courageous for standing up for who he is and letting the public know through this, and probably other, media stories. The conversation about the trans community is in session, and stories like these will keep it going and growing.
