Sept. 21, 2013: Trans Teen Queen

September 21, 2013

I cried when I saw this clip about the first-ever transgender student being crowned homecoming queen at her high school last night: http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/local/orange_county&id=9256575. I heard a couple of days ago that she had entered the competition, along with nine cisgirls. What a courageous 16-year-old to take such a big stand — in Orange County, a conservative bastion in Southern California! She got some negative Facebook posts, but many were positive. And in the end, her fellow students voted for her to take the crown. I never thought something like that would happen in my lifetime. I guess I seriously underestimated the acceptance level of people when it comes to the trans community.

On another note, I read an article the other day about the Pope, who urged Catholics to focus more on healing and mercy than on doctrine and dogma surrounding topics like gay marriage and contraception. I never thought I’d hear that from a Pope! And I was raised Catholic (although I no longer follow the church). I acknowledge that he didn’t condone gay marriage and other dogmatic no-nos. He just said that church followers are focusing too much on them. And that alone is a big step.
