Sept. 15, 2013: Strong Character

September 15, 2013

We watched the last five episodes of “Orange is the New Black” yesterday. (It’s on Netflix, so subscribers can watch any episode on demand.) Warning: The show has sex, profanity and some violence. So if that doesn’t bother you, it’s worth watching. It really is about a woman who has been running from herself and gets to confront who she really is while in prison. But it’s actually an ensemble cast, and the acting by everyone is incredible. The characters are very well defined.

One character, Sophia, is a transsexual who is played by a transsexual. I’m really glad that a trans person is being portrayed in the media as normal person. Despite the fact that she’s in prison — as are many ciswomen (women who identify with their birth gender), the character is not portrayed as a hooker or drag queen; or someone who has to cross-dress because of outside circumstances. Sophia is a former fire fighter with a wife and son, who was living a typical life and transitioned in order to live authentically as a woman. And she is one of the stronger, saner, more forthright people among all of the inmates and prison staff.
