May 8, 2013: Friends

May 9, 2013

We went to a party at a restaurant last night for a friend who is retiring. There were some people there whom I hadn’t met personally but who knew Mara, or at least knew of her playing. (These were people in the singer-songwriter community and their girlfriends/boyfriends/spouses.)

I was really amazed at how some people I didn’t even know were eager to talk with us about Mara’s transition, especially with regard to how much of the world sees trans people. And those whom we knew hugged us and hung out with us just like they did before Mara’s transition. They see that she’s still the same person and she deserves acknowledgement just like she did when she was a he.

Mara remarked to me that we chose a really evolved, accepting group of friends. And that goes for my travel writer/P.R. friends and acquaintances, friends from college, work colleagues, neighbors and other people we’ve told.
