We found out that someone we know who doesn’t accept Mara has referred to her as “it.” I’m not surprised, knowing this person, who has close to zero tolerance for anyone who isn’t Caucasian, Christian (although this person doesn’t practice any religion that I know of) and straight. But it still hurts when anyone bad-mouths my soul mate. Few people whom we have come out to don’t accept Mara, but those few say they support me. I guess they feel they can only “support” me on their terms. As far as I’m concerned, bad-mouthing Mara is not supporting me at all.

Why are some people so mean and cruel? Mara has never done anything to hurt anyone; never taken away anyone’s right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; never said a mean word to anyone. She is just being who she is, and yet some people feel the need to put her down for that, just because they don’t understand her or like her. Like saying mean and cruel things about her is going to somehow change who she is, or convince me that staying with her is wrong. It’s only convincing me of one thing: That the person saying those things is mean and cruel. Or maybe they’re just fearful and insecure. At least that what psychologists might say.
